Cosmo & Alex Pisano Brothers, a Salumeria has been pleasing customers in Mamaroneck, New York, since 1965 with its a huge stock of Italian products and its catering. Since 1988 the store was sold to Pat Colallilo who has been keeping the tradition italian products since the business started 50 years ago.
Mamaroneck Avenue off the Boston Post Road has become populated by a number of new and exciting restaurants and shops specializing in foods from around the world.
There is, however, something to admire about staying power, and Cosmo & Alex Pisano Brothers, a salumeria, has been pleasing customers in Mamaroneck for more than 48 years with its huge stock of Italian products and its catering.
Pat Colalillo bought the shop about 20 years ago from the Pisanos, and he acquired the small bakery next door, calling it Boiano, a few years later. He enlarged it recently, adding more display cases for a huge selection of baked goods. Favorites include fragrant biscotti or pignoli cookies, as well as fruit tarts, cheesecake, rugelach and challah. A few tables have been added so that customers can recharge with a coffee or cappuccino before heading into the salumeria.
In its long, narrow space, Cosmo & Alex crams in, floor to ceiling, many of the products people have shopped for in the grander and more spacious salumerias in Rome. The shop buzzes with customers coming in for sandwiches, picking up dinner or ordering antipasto platters. Prosciutto (imported and domestic), capicola, soppressata, mortadella, provolone, Asiago — they’re all here. As are coils of fresh sausage, olives, salads and prepared foods like chicken oreganato and eggplant rollatine.
In the freezer are fresh pasta, homemade sauces and even whole quail. Shelves hold coffee beans, whole and ground, an exhaustive collection of olive oils and vinegars, dried pasta in shapes you never knew existed, Sicilian sea salt, anisette sugar, almond syrups and quick-cooking rice in flavors like truffle, pesto, tomato and mushroom.
